Luna and Milo are the top female and male cat names in 2025, according to an analysis by Rover.
There are several different lists each year sourced from databases like pet insurance registrations or data from microchipping companies, but Rover’s list is based on its own records, which include millions of registrations on the pet services site.
There’s quite a bit of overlap, as expected, and familiar names top this year’s list, including Lilly, Lucy, Nala, Pepper, Willow, Cleo and Daisy for female cats. For male cats, Leo, Oliver, Charlie, Loki, Max, Simba, Jack and Smokey are among the most popular.

Notably absent was the name Buddy.
“What do you mean Buddy is not on the list?” Buddy the Cat said when told about the new data from Rover. “I shall find out who is responsible for these vile heresies and punish them with my righteous fury as the Emperor of Catkind! Muahahaha.”

coming in at number 7 and a solid 10 above the interloper Simba. Bella is puffed up with satisfaction !

The interloper hasn’t learned his lesson yet? He needs to be educated by claw!

Well, he didn’t make it to the top 10, but at least he’s #46…

Apparently I’m blind and I entered a typo when I searched the list. Sheesh.

Buddy and his name are one-of-a-kind, unique, special. The name Buddy is a treasured vintage name now. Don’t feel bad, Buddy. This is actually good.

I actually try not to be on the list of names everyone uses. A quick read-through tells me that I’m on here for Frankie, if nicknames (Franklin) count. I do have three often-used names now, (all for appearance), which, to my surprise, I don’t see here. They are, Stripey (tabby), Silver (gray cat), and Shelley (tortoiseshell with white); though I sort of morphed that last one to Mary Shelley.

Silver has a spectacularly silver coat and I can’t imagine any other name for him.

That’s a great thing, it makes Buddy’s name more unique and special. In my defense, Luna has her name to match the Astronomy / Roman Mythology theme like her sister, Venus. It is a very overused name though!

Tell Buddy he’s just too unique to have a run-of-the-mill name like Milo. He should embrace his uniqueness. (That’s what we tell Sgt Stripes.)
