When a lost kitten says he wishes he’d never been born, scruffy tomcat Gus is in disbelief.
“Don’t ever say that! Life is a gift, and you’re a cat!” Gus says. “Do you know how good that is, to be a cat?”
“Pretty good?” the kitten asks.
“It’s f—ing great!”
That’s one of a few short scenes revealed in the first trailer for Alley Cats, a new Netflix show created by Ricky Gervais. The comedian plays Gus and an ensemble cast provides the voices of the other neighborhood strays, who seem to spend most of their time veering from one lazy activity to the next while zinging each other with one-liners.
Warning: NSFW language in this trailer:
Although it’s animated, Alley Cats is a comedy for adults. Think South Park except with cats and a much more sarcastic, dry sense of humor. As the trailer makes clear, it’s irreverent and over-the-top, and it seems to tie cat humor in well with broader comedy.
Alley Cats is slated for an Aug. 7 release.

This is the first I’ve heard of this, and am looking forward to it. 🌺

Oh man – this is just the best- animal rights activist Ricky Gervais and hilarious cats, my diary has been marked with a giant x to make sure I get this on Nertflix on its realease date- genius!

Your comment got me curious so I googled Gervais’ activism and the dude is seriously committed. Between his work for animals and his gloriously brutal roast of Hollywood at the 2020 Golden Globes, I’m a fan.

This is right up my Alley – snark snark. Love Ricky. Love cats. Purrfect.
As an aside, I highly recommend The Sheep Detectives (free on Prime). We watched it last night. Wonderful movie. Funny, smart, heart-warming and, yes, I cried a bit…

The baby sheep are always cute. I’ll check it out. Not the type of movie I usually watch but it’s always good to have something lighthearted in the queue.

This will be rated for adults and inaccessible on kids’ accounts on Netflix.

I know but i know kids who would love to see this. About 10-12 years of age or younger. Parents would say no. That word is said by kids all the time and no big deal but would never let anyone under 10 see it. 8 and 10 year old accompany parents to feed feral colony nearby so a shame they cannot see animated film about alley cats. But sure there is something out there until older.

This sounds like a great show, I have to find a friend who has Netflix.

They have multiple subscription tiers now too depending on what you’re willing to pay and if you can tolerate commercials.

This looks like fun. There are times when Caramel meows crossly at me (like when I take a millisecond too long to open the door when he’s demanding to be let in) and I’ve sometimes wondered if he’s swearing at me. Now I know!

Between the impatient, screeching meows and the way they give us that contemptuous glare sometimes, I think it’s fair to say they’re swearing in their private cat language.

I didn’t know Ricky Gervais was an animal rights activist; I’m glad to hear that someone with influence is speaking out on behalf of animals. I look forward to watching his series.

I was surprised by how much money he gives. Millions of pounds from his last few comedy tours, apparently.

If only all celebrities were like that… they could use all their extra money to help animals instead of buying extravagant things.
