  1. Surprisingly I’ve now had four people ask me about the Jonathan Franzen story for the New Yorker and whether PITB would weigh in on it.

I starting writing a response weeks ago but shelved it because of the busy holidays, the fact that reading the damn thing is a chore as Franzen drones on for tens of thousands of words, and mostly because I thought people were sick of reading PITB posts hammering home the same points about the fraudulent science of birders and wildlife biologists.

Anyway, I hear you. I’ve gotta go back and read the whole thing again (ugh) but I will resume work on a post. Thanks for the feedback!

    1. The bacon thing is an obscure reference to The Jerky Boys who ask that question of someone they’re on the phone with. It’s completely nonsensical, classic Jerky Boys humor.

      1. Legendary New York comedy duo who put out a bunch of prank call albums in the 90s. Every kid who grew up in NY I’m the 90s and 2000s heard them, they were insane and very, very funny.

  2. I hate to add to your work and stress load, but Tierra Curry published an opinion in the Center, which seems to be the NRDC publication. She plows the same ground Franzen has worked over and there’s no way to respond to her regurgitated talking points.

Thought you might like to know. Stay warm and give a cuddle to the little guy!

    1. I see one from late December in a publication called The Messenger. Is that the one?

I didn’t see anything objectionable except the inflammatory headline and link to one of the bunk studies. She argues it’s safer for cats and their prey to keep cats inside, which I agree with and think is reasonable. Then she describes converting a stray into a house cat who likes to sit on her lap.

      Is there another one?

      1. Well, I goofed. Somehow I read an abreviated version of this article. I caught the entire thing on the Messenger site, and it’s not nearly as bad as the first two paragraphs made it look. My bad! :C

      2. No worries, with the way stuff is aggregated, rehashed and reshared these days it can be confusing.

Besides how can cats be the vicious predators people claim they are when a mouse infiltrated Casa de Buddy and Bud slept through the whole thing?

      3. Oh no, the little guy ignored a mouse?! Well, rodents can be vicious when they’re cornered and they’re kind of dirty, too, so Buddy was just giving the invader a chance to clear out.

Don’t feel bad about the lack of hunting behavior though, my barn cats routinely ignore the rats playing havok in the chicken coops! This summer a big cotton mouth snake moved in and decimated the population but now it’s too cold for snakes … and the rats are back.

  3. Ahahaha, that Little Buddy is quite the humorist! Groan, I guess I’m going to have to slog through the Franzen article. I need to be ready for those *ahem* internet encounters; the ones I often run into about keeping cats inside. Ours are indoors, but we also feed ferals. I wasn’t fast enough yesterday to photograph two blue Jays and a cardinal chowing down on cat food with a snoozing feral cat nearby. Facts are, we’ve trapped and released ferals inside in the past, some sweetened, some didn’t. Some won’t go into a trap the second time after the initial TNR.
