Unfortunately, Lord Fluffybutt III did not make the list.

U.S. News and World Report compiled a list of the top cat names in America by looking at pet insurance registrations, and a bunch of familiar names topped the list.

Luna is the current most popular name for female cats, followed by Bella, while Milo edged out Oliver for the most popular male cat names. The data is current for the year 2024, the report said.

While other lists use different ways of calculating the top names, including registrations on pet-related sites and listings on PetFinder, the U.S. News list closely mirrors the others.

The name “Buddy” was named “most badass” for the 27th year in a row, since pet insurance companies began keeping statistics. (Okay, we made that up, but it’s probably true.)

  1. Well, none of my cats are on the list and I’m ok with that. I try to give my pets names that fit their personality, not popular names. Mr. Meow Meow, Archie and Beanie. Archie took 2 weeks and multiple names to finally find his. Beanie came pre-named from the shelter. I liked it so much, I kept it. And Meow Meow? He got his name by being the most talkative deaf cat ever! Those are the names we gave them, but the names we CALL them, well, that’s another story!

    1. I think that’s the best way to do it, naming them according to personality. Archie is a classic name and Mr. Meow Meow is great for a deaf cat.

      I went at least two weeks without naming Bud as well, then I realized his name was what I’d been calling him the whole time. He’s a Buddy for sure.

      2. He responds at least 95% of the time, pretty much always unless he’s sleeping. Usually he comes to me, but sometimes he just turns his head and says “Hrrrrrrrm!” He trills a LOT.

      3. At least Buddy responds/recognizes his name. We’ve had Archie and Beanie almost 2 yrs and neither one of them knows their name, to either come to you or even acknowledge you. They’re going in for their check-up next week and I’m gonna ask the vet if we should concerned. We all try to call them by the names we’ve given them to show them that’s who they are, but it’s just not working.

        It’d be funny if it wasn’t something they need to learn. If we’re trying to get their attention when they’re doing something that might hurt them, we can’t. That troubles me a lot because they get into a lot of mischief, especially Beanie. I really hope the vet can shed some light on the matter.

      4. Do you use a lot of nicknames? What about when you feed them their regular meals and give them snacks?

        Of course Bud always comes running the moment he hears me open a treat bag, but I always say “Hey Bud, snack time!” or something similar.

        That stuff reinforces the name and gives them reasons to respond.

        I wonder if the tendency to give cats lots of nicknames can “dilute” their understanding of their real names. I do have a good amount of alternate names for Buddy, but they’re usually variations like Budster, Budderball, El Buddarino, Little Bud, Budweiser, and tyrant-themed names like Buddito Mussolini when he’s being a little dictator.

        Since it’s happening with both your cats, it sounds like an environmental issue rather than anything wrong with them. Just my two cents though, your vet can hopefully clear it up. Good luck.

    2. My client named her cat Mouse. I like strange names for pets. I have a client with Maine Coon named Zelda. I was going to call my current cat Loki. God of mischief but found out more about Loki. Not good. So it was T.T.Stands for Tiger, too. Because all the stray cats that came into my garden were striped tigers. All adopted and i kept dumped cat T.T.

      1. Mouse is a cute name for a cat. The first cat I ever had I named Fleabag and he was a great cat. There’s a guy on Twitter I follow because his story is just so sweet/cute. Dude became a cat Dad by accident. He found small kitten at work and decided to take in home. One the best things about their story is her name. He named her Dandruff! You just cannot forget a name like that!

        I love kooky, kind of off the wall names for pets. I feel like the person took their time in finding the right name and didn’t just give it something everyone else is using. Shows a lot of imagination and people will remember the name because it’s different.

    1. Flattery will get you everywhere with the little guy, Jean. Sometimes when he comes to me for scritches, I tell him he has his own website and lots of people love him, and even though he cannot possibly understand, he purrs louder and loves hearing about it.
