Wordless Wednesday: The United States Botanic Garden

A jungle in the heart of our nation’s capital.

The United States Botanic Garden is in the heart of Washington, D.C., on the grounds of the Capitol. Admission is free, like almost every museum and public exhibit in the city, and the botanists and designers offer new flora with novel themes every season. These photos were taken in April with my Canon and an 18-55mm lens.

    1. They’re not that different, but the DC garden is probably the most well-funded.

I knew the jungle section would be warm, but I wasn’t prepared for just how hot and humid it was. It’s really beautiful though. The staff do an amazing job.

      1. Yes. Some areas are hot and humid if i remember correctly. Your photos are great. My hobby is photography. After my ancient camera died i sort of slowed down.

      2. Thanks, Gilda. My camera’s kind of outdated now but it’s still solid and gets the job done. I figure the only way to improve is to keep shooting, so I try to use it as much as possible.

  1. I loved the photos. Gorgeous. I grew up across one of the many entrances to the Bronx Zoo. My favorite place was the Japanese Garden. I love that you have these stunning memories and I hope Buddy’s sitter survived your absence 🐾🐾🫶🏼👣

    1. Yes, he’s been a very good boy the last couple times I’ve gone away. He’s been attached to me since I got home and the first night, he woke me up about a dozen times — laying on my chest and purring as he rubbed his head against my face, grooming my hair, burrowing into me, etc.

The Bronx Zoo is awesome. I’m hoping to go there again soon, this time with my tripod and long lens, and just spend most of my time in the tiger viewing area.

When was the last time you were there?

      1. Sadly, about 10 years. I keep promising myself I’ll go back soon & then it doesn’t happen. I do hope you go and return with photos. I’m also so happy Buddy did so well with you away. Are our boys getting a little kinder or softer with age? I love it and hate it at the same time. I know Buddy & Oreo are the same age and they are also our solo kids… I’m just going to celebrate that Buddy wasn’t wicked and he cuddled, nuzzled and woke you! Let’s run with that

      2. I think you’re right, they do mellow out with age. Hopefully we both have a long time left with our little buddies. I’d be lying if I said I haven’t been thinking about it a lot, and I don’t do well with it. It’s difficult to even write this now.

But Bud has shown no signs of any health problems except for that one scary incident a while back, and either he just got really sick or he ate something he shouldn’t have, because he’s been good ever since then.

I also put effort into making sure he eats his wet food. I feed him wet twice a day and carefully rotate between turkey, chicken, salmon, tuna, beef and whatever else is available, as well as mixing up textures to keep him interested and happy with his meals. It’s worked really well. He would only eat pate at first, now he eats shredded and chunks. He didn’t like tuna at first either, but now he cleans his bowl when he has it, leaving not even a morsel behind.

So I hope that makes a difference, and I hope all the attention and love he gets makes a difference too. I know you love Oreo and he gets plenty of love and attention as well. Hopefully we will still be talking about how well they’re doing 10 years from now and beyond.

      3. Oh my, we’re on the same page and I hate to admit that I think of it too. I also give O two cans of food daily. He takes a medicine once a day with his first meal and oddly he loves it. It’s kind of funny how he sits next to me and waits for it.

I never forgot when Buddy got sick. I cried for you. That time you saw people who didn’t have the outcome you and Buddy did. In the room no one wants to go into… I was in that place once with Oreo as well. It’s awful to say the least. That’s the reason for the Chewy automatic scripts and foods. The good news is he likes it all and he’s healthy. So far so good.

They need to be here for a long time… We can’t be without them so they’re just going to be stuck with us and us with them!!! I may be old AF reading PITB in 2035, but I’ll be here if you’re here… Send my love to Buddy and let him know his friend over here wants his food too! Oreo is a bottomless pit, but if that’s my worst problem, I’ll be fine, careful but fine. Good night my friendly photographer & favorite blogger 🐾🐾👣🐾🐾👣
