2023’s Most Popular Cat Names: No Buddy?!

Bella and Luna retain their spots as the most popular names for female cats, while male cats are commonly named Leo, Milo, Simba and Oliver.

The top cat and dog names for 2023 have been released, and Rover lists the usual suspects for the New York area.

The top female names for felines include Luna, Pepper, Lily, Coco and Bella, while the boys were Leo, Oliver, Milo, Jack and Henry.

There is no Buddy to be found even amongst the dogs, whose list included Charlie, Max, Teddy and Oliver, while females included Lucy and Rosie in addition to the ever-popular Bella and Luna.

I have a niece named Lucy and a nephew named Milo, neither of whom are old enough yet to understand their names are more popular with four-legged little ones than humans.

Nationally, Luna and Bella occupy the two top spots for female cats, followed by classics like Nala, Kitty and Cleo, while the most popular male cats in the US are Oliver and Leo, with names like Simba, Ollie and Jasper rounding out the top 10.

Again, not a Buddy to be found among the most popular male cat names.

This is obviously because the name Buddy is so special it is only conferred upon the most meowgnificent, meowscular and meowsterful felines. (Is he still looking over my shoulder?)

Totally Righteous!
Who’s ready to rock? After a nice nap, of course!

Interestingly, nostalgic names from the 80s and 90s are trending, with people naming their female dogs and cats Alanis (Morisette), Ginger Spice, Avril (Levigne), Richard Gere and Leonardo DogCaprio among other monikers.

I don’t know if I could see myself naming a cat after a 90s band, musician or actor. I think, in these situations, it’s always best to imagine what happens if your furry friend gets lost and you have to walk around the neighborhood calling them by name.

“Come ‘ere, Weezer!”

“Where are you, little RZA? Who makes dope beats? You make dope beats, yes you do!”

“Time for din-din, Ol’ Dirty Bastard!”

“Where’s my widdle Rage Against the Machine? Aren’t you just a precious Red Hot Chili Pepper!”

If you feel like a jerk calling a name out, it’s probably best to go with something else. Which is one reason why Bud isn’t Brutus the Bone Cruncher or Supreme Warlord Felinius Decimus Maximus.

Rover compiles its annual lists of most popular names from its user database, which includes millions of pets registered by their proud humans…and not enough Buddies.

  1. What, no Buddy!? It’s such a natural! We’ve even had a cat we called Little Buddy. There have been times I’ve called all the boys Buddy and all the girls Sweetheart, regardless of their actual names. Naming at our house is actually chaos … I’ve picked names and those are known at the vet, then the hubs calls them something else. I do that too, though. He’ll call Lynx The Fuzzy One, and I’ll call him Fuzzbutt.

    1. I think there’s something inherent in cats that compels us to have multiple names for them. It can never be just one.

Buddy is a great name. It wasn’t intentional on my part, I just called him little buddy and bud while I was trying to settle on a “real” name, and then it became obvious that that’s what his name is.

      All cats are little buddies.

      1. 👍😺I was just sent a photo with Furminas new sibling, Buddy.Furmina is cat that was dumped on me. BUDDY IS SMITTEN WITH FURMINA! Could be the start of a love story. Let’ hope not a love triangle. Buddy has a brother. 🤞

    2. The New Kid already has a slew of nicknames: Pantaloons, Squirt, Shortstop (appropo since he’s named after former SF Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford), The Kid, The Disheveled One, and La Plume (pronounced la-ploom-a).

  2. Buddy’s extraordinary prowess and charm make him unique among cats. Naturally his name must also be unique.

    1. Buddy has given his blessing to presidentialize the fan club, although he cautions that the amount of fan mail he receives can be overwhelming, sometimes as often as twice a month. You may find yourself quickly buried in correspondence from his fans.

  3. ..Bella is of course far too modest to notice that she is in the top feline names… I am sure that is why she biffed Bertie this morning to make the point he is nowhere to be seen. Buddy’s name not being on the list is again a sign of his covert nature and it is also a name of privilege and rank only associated with hugely superior felines

    1. I’m sure it’s an MI5 thing, picking a common name so as to blend in and not call any attention to her official duties on behalf of king and country. Much better than “008” and calling too much attention to herself by driving an Aston Martin. I imagine Bella driving a more understated vehicle, like a McLaren 720S.

      1. Speaking of very British, have you seen the show Slow Horses? It’s an MI5 thriller with a great cast, including Gary Oldman as the miserable head spook of a dead-end MI5 office where problem agents are sent to quietly waste their careers away. Except for The Wire, British police dramas are so much better than the overly earnest crap we have here.

      2. I’ve not seen Slow Horses but will look it up – Gary Oldman is superb and it sounds excellent. I am afraid I must confess to being a Rizzoli and Isles fan (I even bought the entire series…) If you get a chance check out “The Sweeney” from the 1970’s – gritty and very much of its time with John Thaw one of Britains true great actors

      3. I will definitely check it out, I like old school police shows and I like UK police dramas in particular partly because they have no guns and have to get by on their skills and wits. The difference in police cultures is fascinating considering the US and UK are so similar when it comes to their courts and overall legal systems.

  4. I am sure there is no TT in cat names. It was that or Loki at the time. But i heard Loki was a killer. So TT it was. Stands for Tiger, too. Because at one point my garden had only tiger stiped strays/ferals. All passed away.
